Tim Walker, fashion's story teller

Great news for fashion photography lovers in London: Somerset House, in collaboration with Mulberry, presents Tim Walker: Story Teller exhibition from 18 October 2012  until 27 January 2013. The exhibition fits in with the launching of his new book, “Story Teller” published by Thames and Hudson.

There will be also several events accompanying this exhibition that will allow viewers to discover Tim’s universe including exciting workshops, spotlight tours, interesting talks (Tim Walker in Conversation with Penny Martin), cult film screenings of La Belle et la Bete, The Red Shoes, A Matter of Life and Death and Tim’s own first feature, short-film The Lost Explorer.

Tim Walker sees photography as a meaning of telling a whimsical story; that’s why he chooses models with striking faces that become fascinating characters. His pictures stir one’s imagination with extravagant props and settings (including a giant swan or an UFO) while the beautiful clothes become costumes in a play; a fantasy inspired one with humorous tones or a darker tale with surrealist and gothic hints.

The London-based artist started his fashion photography career with an internship at Vogue House, where he discovered Cecil Beaton's works - one of his artistic influences - and after graduation, in 1994, he spent some time as the fourth assistant of renowned fashion photographer Richard Avedon, an experience described as ”an invaluable lesson in how a photographer communicates with a sitter”.

Called “daydreams on paper” by journalist Teddy Jamieson, Tim Walker’s fantastic narrative pictorials and surrealist portraits have graced glossy pages for more than 15 years, being featured in British, French, American and Italian Vogue, Vanity Fair, W magazine and The New Yorker among many other publications.
