Erwin Olaf, the shocking factor in fashion imagery

The work of Dutch photographer Erwin Olaf (b. 1959,  Hilversum) is often daring and provocative, dealing with social conventions and taboos in a clever, highly stylized way. A former student of Journalism, as he declared for Vogue Italy recently, he felt the need to fabricate his own reality through imagery rather than documenting it.

The latest collaborations with the fashion world are the mildest exhibits of the photographer's inner turmoil and include fashion editorials in Grey magazine, Vogue Netherlands, Jalouse magazine and the advertising campaign for Italian label Bottega Veneta for the fall/winter 2013 season. Erwin Olaf's fashion photography is a showcase for his refined portraiture skills, using his unique aesthetic flair in managing colors, patterns and lights, creating dramatic moods, often surrealistic, austere, with renaissance and baroque influences.

Prada Donna fall-winter 2013 campaign

The first images from Prada Donna fall-winter 2013 advertising campaign have arrived. As in previous season the campaign was shot by photographer Steven Meisel in a studio-portrait style with a tone of grit and raw sensuality added to match the runaway show's atmosphere. The setting is bare, severe with only vintage industrial chairs for the seductive protagonists to rest on. The autumnal dark shades of clothes and setting make a striking contrast with the harsh light, like a cold-season morning light.

Maiyet, Daria and the thrill of traveling

A fresh and smart approach in fashion advertising, the collaboration between New York based label Maiyet and photographer/film maker Cass Bird sets apart from the endless images of models standing in a rack-like, unnatural pose. Few fashion photographers give emphasis to the atmosphere surrounding the label in a fashion campaign which I think is more important, unlike a look book or catalog that just displays the clothes.

Cass Bird's photographs have been featured in noteworthy magazines such as The New Yorker, Details, Dossier, and Rolling Stone, as well as in advertising campaigns for Converse, Levi's, Sony, and Nike. Maiyet is an innovative luxury brand that fuses modern design with rare artisan skills, supporting the next generation of master craftsmen from Colombia, India, Indonesia, Italy, Kenya, Mongolia, and Peru. In partnership with independent non-profit organization Nest, Maiyet organizes customized training and helps developing artisan business, promoting entrepreneurship, prosperity and stability.

You will understand more about Pavesi’s work with a quote from the photographer’s interview featured in Self Service magazine Spring/Summer 2012 issue: “I don’t like riches that aren’t accompanied by thought, and I don’t like bourgeoisie if it becomes narrow-minded and uncultured. I like mystery; I don’t like affection. All those things that come from it don’t interest me. People feel safe in affection. And I’m always looking for, and intrigued by, content. I love the unconventional and I’m always looking for it.”

A sunny dream: Club Monaco spring 2012

A romantic daydream is the mood Club Monaco sets off for the spring/summer 2012 season. Under the artistic lens of Belgian photographer Serge LeBlon (whose work I ashamedly admit I just discovered) the versatile and always fascinating Sasha Pivovarova plays a nostalgic muse, making us dive into a sea of introspection. Soft lights and shadows, the use of contre-jour (backlighting) or sepia tones and peaceful landscapes give the impression of a sweet reverie.

Winter Warmth from Ellos

Your winter wardrobe is one of the most important of the year. Winter in Britain is when we usually experience our country’s harshest weather conditions – despite the occasional heatwave, the British summer is essentially pretty mediocre. Winter temperatures, however, having been becoming increasingly harsh over the past few years and this winter could be the coldest yet.

Ellos outwear

The winter range from Ellos is advertised extensively on their homepage at www.ellos.co.uk. The range of women’s wear for winter is particularly impressive, with a vast range of items including cardigans, sweaters, jackets, coats and winter dresses all designed with your warmth and comfort in mind. Ellos isn’t limited to practicality, however – they also have sections dedicated to the latest seasonal trends, including the return of the denim craze and a collection of the hottest autumn/winter footwear.

When it comes to footwear, Ellos’s collection of women’s shoes and boots is second to none. As the site claims, Ellos sells “shoes to match all your outfits” and many of these utilise some of the major footwear fashion trends we will be seeing this season. The wedge heel is no longer limited to summery sandals – wedge boots have made the transition into winter collections, in darker shades such as black or brown, or in combination with another of summer’s maintained trends – leopard print. Worker style boots are also popular this season having made huge waves as festival fashion over the summer. If you feel that the flat worker boots lack femininity, there are now many high heeled boots that utilise the popular laces of worker boots whilst still looking glamorous. You can browse the full range of Ellos footwear online at their website.

Running through the field at Fillipa K

Camilla Akrans' soft, sun-soaked imagery produced for Filippa K spring/summer 2011 ad campaign makes you wish for a perpetual cool summer. Pictures taken in a beautiful landscape of the Swedish archipelago, the still ads and videoclip, feature German model Katrin Thormann for womenswear and French male model Vincent LaCrocq for menswear ads.  The fresh simplicity of the ads styled by Robert Rydberg resonates with the unrestricted modern minimalist aesthetic of the Swedish fashion label.
